천재교육 Live 한국사 (라이브 한국사) - 교과서 인물로 배우는 우리 역사

초등학교 2학년 막내아들이 어제 글을 하나 쓰고 있었습니다.

천재교육에서 나온 "교과서로 인물로 배우는 우리 역사: Live 한국사(글 임창호, 그림 김기수, 학습 구성 및 감수 이학운)"를 읽은 후인데요.

이 책은 만화 형식으로 구성한 책이라서 그림과 만화에 익숙한 어린 초등학생이 비교적 쉽게 흥미를 느끼고 우리 역사를 알 수 있을 것 같습니다.

총 20권으로 이루어진 시리즈 중에서 제9권 '조선의 건국과 발전', 제19권 '6.25와 경제 개발' 등의 책을 읽고 썼다면 종이를 한 장 내밀었습니다.

옆에서 제가 컴퓨터로 블로그에 글을 쓰고 올리는 것이 마냥 부러웠는지 종이를 하나 내밀고 자기가 쓴 글을 블로그에 올려 달라고 떼를 씁니다.

온종일 고민하다가, 장차 아들이 커서 이 글을 읽을 때, 어제의 일이 떠올라 추억이 될 수 있기를 기대하며 해당 글을 올려 봅니다.

나중에 커서 이 포스팅을 다시 볼 아들에게 전해 줄 글을 하나 선정했습니다. 글을 쓴 사람이 맥아더여서 조금 망설여지기는 하지만, 그도 한 아들의 아빠였기에 그의 글을 인용해 봅니다. 아랫글 해석은 제 아들이 고등학생쯤에 직접 번역해서 댓글로 올릴 수 있도록 그때까지 비워둡니다.

A Father's Prayer

Build me a son, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a son who will know Thee ─ and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge. 

Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, and the weakness of true strength.

Then I, his father will dare to whisper, “I have not lived in vain.”
